Liontown Resources’ maiden drilling within its Moora project, in southern Western Australia has intersected mineralisation within the same geological terrain as Chalice Mining’s play-opening Julimar discovery (reports MiningNews).

The aspiring lithium miner undertook its first program of wide-spaced aircore drilling late last quarter, almost two years after securing the three Moora leases, with the early results being considered encouraging.

Assays reported to date from the first 38 holes included 10m at 1.9% copper from 32m to the end-of-hole, including 4m at 2.5% copper from 36m, beneath a shallow gold zone of 12m at 0.5 grams per tonne gold, including 4m at 1.1gpt, while testing the Mt Yule prospect.

Of the initial 38 holes that were drilled to refusal, 17 returned no significant result.

The balance returned lower-grade intercepts, believed to indicate geochemical haloes in the weathered, oxidised profile that may be associated with primary mineralisation in fresh bedrock.

The work so far as defined a 1km-long strike of mineralisation.

While there are some 81 holes still to assay, and the remainder of the 12,500m stage one program is yet to be drilled, the explorer's initial interpretation is that the copper-gold mineralisation is associated with elevated nickel and platinum, indicating possible magmatic sulphides at depth.

Liontown is planning two of up to 15 RC holes to intercept the interpreted Mt Yule prospect at depth.

In addition to the further 80-90 aircore holes to be completed, and up to 2000m of RC is planned.
